The U17 Women’s National team from Ghana called looking for a game.  After picking the phone up from the ground, I promptly replied with certainly – we can fit you into our calendar!  The Ghana team was training locally at the Decatur Jack Allen complex in preparation for the U17 World Cup to be played in Trinidad and Tobago this month.  The ’94 Blue Girls were able to host a successful match with the super team, which goes by the name of the Black Maidens.  With support from Huntsville City, the Huntsville Sports Commission, and many HFC volunteers – we were able to provide a professional venue for the game and post-game meal shared by both HFC players and the Maidens.  The game itself was amazing.  It took the Maidens 35 minutes to find their first of 4 goals.  We were so thankful for the opportunity to play one of the top teams in the WORLD.  Our players gained so much from the match to include the life lessons learned from the players, such as, one player sharing that her “family job” was to play soccer and gather food for her family.  Many of the girls from the Maiden team will return home to their schools were it is unusual for them to have any more than two soccer balls for their entire school.  And yet – these girls find a way to qualify for the world cup!
